The Etsy Reporting Rule
If you're a maker, crafter, or vintage hunter on Etsy, you might have seen scary headlines about the "HMRC Crackdown."
Here is the truth: The tax laws didn't change, but the data collection did. Etsy now shares your sales activity directly with HMRC if you reach certain levels.
The Short Answer
You only pay tax on your PROFIT, not your total sales.
If you sell £1,500 worth of jewelry but spend £1,000 on beads and postage, you only pay tax on the remaining £500. This is different from the £1,000 'Gross' rule for registration.
The £1,000 Free Pass
The UK has a very generous starting point for entrepreneurs. HMRC calls it the Trading Allowance.
The 'Safe Zone' Rules:
- If your SALES (Gross) are under £1,000: You keep everything. You don't even need to tell HMRC you exist.
- If your SALES (Gross) are over £1,000: You MUST register for Self Assessment, even if your actual profit is £0.
Warning: HMRC looks at Revenue (the total money coming in) to decide if you need to register. Even if you spent more than you earned, you still have a legal obligation to tell them if your total sales crossed £1,000.
Materials & Deductions
The best part about Being an Etsy seller is that you can "lower" your tax bill by accurately recording your expenses.
Real Example: Sophie
Sophie sells knitted scarves. She earned £1,200 but spent £400 on yarn and £100 on Etsy fees.
Takeaway: Sophie has crossed the £1,000 registration line, but she only pays tax on her net profit of £700.
Are You a Maker or Reseller?
HMRC is particularly interested in your "intent." This is what decides if you're a hobbyist or a business.
- Buying to Sell: If you buy vintage items at car boot sales specifically to resell on Etsy, you are a business.
- Making to Sell: If you buy materials to create new finished goods, you are a business.
- Selling Personal Junk: If you are selling your old collection of vintage toys that you've had for 20 years, you are usually NOT a business.
